MIT (Manipal Institute of Technology) Manipal
Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) is one of the best private engineering colleges available in the country, is inaugurated on May 11, 1957 as Manipal Engineering College (MEC) by the then Chief Minister of Mysore, S. Nijalingappa.
In the starting months, classes were conducted in Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Manipal campus until its current campus infrastructure was ready at the end of 1957. MEC was started with 25 staffs and an annual intake of 120 students on a campus of 180 acres.
MEC was started with Civil Engineering as the first undergraduate course, but by 1961 they started Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Since the inception, it was affiliated with the Karnatak University and then got affiliated with University of Mysore in 1965.
In the year 1974, MEC was renamed as Manipal Institute of Technology, and the institute brought under the responsibility of Mangalore University in 1980.
In the year 1993, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) was granted Deemed University status and Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) became its constituent institute in 2000.
Currently, MIT Manipal has 18 academic departments and grants undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees, and the campus is spread over 313 acres.
The institute undertakes sponsored research programmes supported by funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, AICTE and the Ministry of Environmental Sciences. It has collaborative research programs in association with premier research laboratories and institutes in India and abroad.
