Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) is recognized as one of India’s top private engineering institutions with a rich legacy spanning more than six decades. It was originally established as Manipal Engineering College (MEC) on May 11, 1957, and inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Mysore, S. Nijalingappa.
MEC started with Civil Engineering as its first undergraduate program. By 1961, the institute expanded to offer Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. It was initially affiliated with Karnatak University, later shifting its affiliation to the University of Mysore in 1965.
The college was renamed Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1974, and in 1980, it was brought under the jurisdiction of Mangalore University. A major turning point came in 1993, when the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) received Deemed University status. Subsequently, in 2000, MIT officially became a constituent institution of MAHE.
Today, MIT Manipal has expanded to 18 departments offering a comprehensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The campus has also grown substantially, now spread across 313 acres equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education campus is spread over 313 acres of what once used to be a desolate plateau of hard, laterite rock in north Karnataka’s Udupi district. There are a lot of facilities to supplement classroom teaching. These facilities encourage and aid students in innovative thinking and pursuing careers of their choice.
- Manipal Academy of Higher education has an excellent technical library situated in MIT campus. The library building occupies a total area of about 70, 00 Sq.feet and has 3 floors and is easily accessible to the students, faculty and researchers of the institute. The library can accommodate 950 users at a time.
- The library hosts more than 1,50,000 print resources. The library also subscribes many electronic resources as a component of digital library, which includes e-books, e-journals, e-standards, e-databases, etc.
- The Institute has good sports facilities, sports activities are supervised by the University Sports Council. Marena, centrally-cooled sports complex at MAHE, is the largest and best equipped sports centres in the country.
- The Dr TMA Pai International Convention Centre is one of the best convention centres in the country. With a surface area of 16730 sq metres and a basement area of 4200 sq metres, it has a seating capacity of 4000.
- ICICI Bank and Bank of Baroda have their branches within the campus which cater all banking facilities for the students as well as faculties.
- ATMs of different Banks such as SBI, HDFC, Canara Bank, Corporation Bank, Axis Bank, etc. located within the campus for transaction facilities to the students and faculties.
- MIT Manipal provides separate, secure and well-maintained hostels for boys and girls with options like AC/Non-AC, Single/Double/Triple Sharing.
- MIT Manipal has multiple canteens and cafeteria serving both Indian and International cuisines.
More than 300 recruiters from different domains such as Core IT, Core Engineering, Consulting, FinTech, FMGC, Analytics, etc., have participated in the placement process for the cycle 2024-25.
